Project Description
nspired by the artwork of European artist, Maria Surducan, we wanted to create a poster to promote our Wind Ensemble’s Scheherazade concert series. We contacted the artist, who had created a series of illustrations for a Symphactory Orchestra concert. She agreed to provide high resolution copies of one of her designs for free with the following conditions: 1) we use only one design for our free concert series, 2) we don’t sell the poster for profit, 3) her name and website would be printed on the poster and mentioned on our social media postings.
We printed the 11″ by 17″ posters in our district print shop and put them up around our community. I printed enough posters for every member of our ensemble to have one as a keepsake as well.

There were no challenges. We enjoyed corresponding with the artist to make this project happen.

The measures of success could be seen through audience attendance or simply the degree to which student enjoyed signing each other’s posters when the concerts were finished.
Advice for someone looking to replicate this project in their own community?
Find an artist and ask! I was surprised at how easy the entire project was. She was happy to know that we liked her work and was eager to gain followers on her projects.
